I've been puzzled by the Vatican's position on immigration. In recent weeks, there have been several indications of Vatican support for mass third-world immigration. This strikes me as curious, given that, in Europe at least, most of the immigrants will undoubtedly be Muslims who will contribute to the further erosion of Europe's Christian heritage. I wonder whether the Vatican's position on the issue has been shaped by the Catholic church in the USA. There, of course, immigrants will disproportionately be Catholic Latin Americans. This extract is very revealing:

No religious group wields more power on behalf of high immigration to the U.S. than the Catholic Church. Thanks to the 1880-1914 and 1970-present Great Waves of immigration consisting primarily of Catholics, the church towers over all other American religious groups. Its 59 million members give it immense financial, institutional and political clout, even though polls suggest the majority of its members probably don’t agree with its pro-immigration stances. (See page 98ff for an in depth look at Catholic thought.)
At times, it can seem as though the church is engaged in population competition. In a recent news story, Father Richard J. Ryscavage noted that immigration is the “growing edge of Catholicism in the United States.” He is executive director of the Migration and Refugee Services of the U.S. Catholic Conference which resettles about 40 percent of all refugees into this country each year.

“We are in the middle of a huge wave of immigration ... and most of them are Catholics,” Ryscavage said. “It’s the key to our future and the key to why the Church is going to be very healthy in the 21st century.”

There also are recurring signs that Catholic agencies aid illegal aliens in various communities. A notable example was the production in 1989 by the Archdiocese of New York of a “survival book” that offered tips to illegal Irish aliens on how to avoid federal immigration agents. In Southern California, many Catholic clergy are outspoken expounders about the immorality of laws that limit Latin Americans from crossing the U.S. border and taking up residence.

Has the Vatican's policy on immigration been shaped by the US experience, then, in order to be intellectually consistent, applied to the rest of the world, including Europe, where conditions may be very different?

Indications of Vatican support for mass third-world immigration, including the mass immigration of Muslims

In his Easter message, the Pope called on Europeans to "open their hearts to welcome" African refugees.

When the EU Court of Justice ruled against the Italian law which allowed illegal immigrants to be jailed if they ignored notice to quit the country, the Vatican expressed approval for the decision.

The ruling was welcomed by the head of the Vatican's migration body, Antonio Maria Veglio.

"The sentence shows attention and sensitivity towards human dignity, even when the human being concerned is in an irregular position," said Veglio.

The Vatican praised the policy followed in the Italian town of Riace whose young people had left in pursuit of work; the mayor encouraged third world immigrants to settle in the town to replace them. The result is a town strikingly divided between elderly, Christian, white-skinned Europeans and youthful, brown-skinned, Muslim immigrants.
